What Is a .X Domain? Blockchain Domains Explained

·
What is a .X domain

You’ve probably typed thousands of web addresses ending in .com, .net or .org. A .x domain looks similar — amour.x, for example — but it works in a completely different way. It is a blockchain domain: a web address that lives on a blockchain and belongs to a crypto wallet. You don’t rent it from a traditional domain registrar.

This guide explains what a .x domain is, how it differs from a regular domain, how to open one, and why we chose it for Amour.X.

What is a .X domain?

A .x domain is a Web3 domain name. It doesn’t live in the traditional domain system that runs .com and .org. Instead, a public blockchain records it. A digital wallet holds the domain, much like any other digital asset, and only that wallet can control it.

The .x ending is one of several blockchain domain extensions, alongside names like .crypto, .nft, .wallet and .dao. Web3 domain providers such as Unstoppable Domains offer them.

How is a .X domain different from a .com?

  • Who controls it: A registrar manages a .com, under an organization that oversees the extension. Whoever holds a .x domain in their wallet controls it.
  • Renting vs. owning: You renew traditional domains every year — miss a payment and you can lose the name. With providers like Unstoppable Domains, you usually buy a blockchain domain once and never renew it.
  • Where the website lives: A .com normally points to a company’s server. A .x domain usually points to content on a peer-to-peer network such as IPFS, where many computers share the files instead of one.
  • Harder to take down: No central company can simply switch it off, so blockchain domains and the content they point to are much harder to censor or remove.

How does a .X domain work?

When you visit a .x address, your browser reads the domain’s record from the blockchain. That record tells it where the website’s content lives — typically a unique address on IPFS. The browser then fetches the site from the peer-to-peer network and shows it to you like any other page.

IPFS builds each address from the content itself, so you receive exactly the files the owner published. If anyone changed anything, the address would no longer match.

How do I open a .X website?

Blockchain domains don’t work in every browser yet. To open a .x address like amour.x, use a Web3 browser such as Brave, which reads blockchain domains directly — just type the address into the address bar.

Regular browsers such as Chrome, Safari and Firefox can’t open .x addresses on their own. Some of them can with an extension from the domain provider, but the simplest option is to download Brave.

Why Amour.X uses a .X domain

Amour.X is the Web3 home of Amour Escorts. We chose a .x domain and a peer-to-peer network because they solve problems the adult industry has faced for years:

  • Resilience: We publish Amour.X to a peer-to-peer network rather than a single server, so it doesn’t depend on one host staying online.
  • Independence: No registrar can suspend a blockchain domain because of shifting third-party policies.
  • Privacy: Amour.X stores no personal account data. We publish profiles on Amour.X to the peer-to-peer network instead of keeping them in a central database.

We publish profiles with the WEB3 VIP plan on Amour.X, which gives them a second, decentralized home next to amourescorts.com. As far as we know, Amour.X is the first escort directory on a peer-to-peer network with its own blockchain .x domain.
